How to become a registered dog breeder

I am often asked by people when they are deciding to hire one of our studs to mate with their girl – How does it work with becoming a breeder?

Are you allowed to have your own puppies?

The answer is, you need to do your research – As we support only responsible breeding. For all dogs to be completely looked after and loved.

And yes, you are allowed to have your own puppies.

If you are in Victoria, the way to become a registered micro-breeder is to simply click here, and click Register.

This will take you to the Animal Welfare Victoria website, where you can quickly and easily get a Source number, and become a responsible micro-breeder. Which means you can have one or two female dogs, who are allowed to have puppies.

Then that’s it, you are a registered micro-breeder, and you’re ready to go. You will need your Source number when you take the puppies to the vet, to be registered, microchipped, and vaccinated, before heading to their loving forever homes.

I have wrote before a blog called ‘What are backyard breeders?‘ Where I say how we support responsible breeding. And this is the best way to do it.

To know that the puppies you have, and that people can then have as a part of their family, are coming from a family with two dogs, who are all getting much love… Sounds good to me!!!

Some breeders think that people are only breeders if they are registered with Dogs Victoria, ANKC, MDBA, or another organisation. These are technically known as ‘recreational organisations.’

Unfortunately within these organisations, there can be a lot of hierarchy, bullying, and scams. For example I’ve once bought a pug from a breeder with a ‘pedigree certificate’ and it was fake – his entire genetic background was made-up, and he went on to have a genetic disorder and had to be desexed, to never spread that genetic disorder – but because of the breeder’s position in the organisation, it’s okay for that to happen. And no, I’m not going to name names.

I rather be registered with the Victorian government, and support people having a Source number, so that we can know where all puppies are coming from.

Please do all the research that you can, on raising puppies – You will find it to be a life changing and enjoyable experience – and it feels so good to know that you are responsibly contributing to our world, and the welfare of animals.
